“49 Days”: Interview with scriptwriter

“49 Days” (49D) originates from my curiosity about death.

Scriptwriter So Hyun-Kyung (SHK) — “The story of 56 days …..communicates the message of “Live life to its fullest now.”

Regarding the surprisingly diverse opinions surrounding the ending of 49D, SHK smilingly says: ” The work is much harder than I imagined.” “What to do? Scolded and I still have to thank everyone….Can’t satisfy everyone….”

Q:  It’s a very unusual work.

A: I often think: There are bound to be moments of pain in life, so I once went to XXX Mountain [ED: don’t know how to translate name, sorry!] on my own.  I spent all my energy going up and down the mountain until I could no longer go down again, so I had to spend the night on the mountain.  It was Winter in late December.  I had no watch, no cell phone.  I thought then: If anything happened to me, no one would know.  I was very scared and thought about all sorts of things.  I did not, however, think about my dying in vain, only about those I was going to leave behind.  If I left like that, what’s going to happen to my family?  As soon as I realized I was not living just for myself, I immediately used three hours to get down the mountain in great difficulty in the dark.

A few years ago, a fellow writer died very young.  Although he was undergoing chemo treatment, he was writing a drama because of broadcasting arrangement.  Suddenly he wanted to take an afternoon nap, so he went into the bedroom and next thing he was gone, just like that, no preparation at all.  After I experienced such things, I feel it is necessary to make some preparations before death.

—-I feel so glad to finally see the face behind the successful Korean drama “Pure Love/49 Days”..she’s really a brilliant writer with a brilliant perspective towards life,now,before I was only looking forward to the drama and the actors on it,but now,I will be more focused on who wrote it..because after all,the writers played a big part on a story so I have two idols now when it comes to writing K-dramas..first is the fantastic duo of HONG SISTERS and now..So Hyun Kyung!I am her fan from now on!
